On May 29, 19 “Stewards” graduated from Syracuse EFC’s GREEN-PR Stewardship Program. Part of the Generating Replicable Environmental Education Networks in Puerto Rico (GREEN-PR) initiative, the Stewardship Program provides intensive training for local college students and community members in the subjects of sustainable materials management and green infrastructure. Stewards then use their knowledge and resources to implement projects in their local communities, with a focus on K-12 schools.
Stewards were recognized for their work engaging school communities in creating recycling centers and educational signage, conducting beach clean-ups, building compost bins and rainwater collection systems, establishing school gardens, leading creative reuse art projects such as a sculpture garden, and more. The graduation ceremony featured guest speaker Dalma Cartagena, who teaches agricultural science for 3rd-8th grade classes in Orocovis, Puerto Rico. Cartagena is part of a growing movement in Puerto Rico to revive its agricultural industry.
Another round of the Stewardship Program will begin next semester.
