Created in January 2016, the East Hub is physically located at the Ana Roque de Duprey High School, and supported by the organization Puerto Rico Composta. The main goal of the Hub is to educate schools, businesses, and the community on the benefits and importance of the sustainable material management (SMM), with a particular focus on composting systems.

Hub Activities:

Environmental Education in School Curricula:
– The Ana Roque de Duprey High School is currently benefiting from the excellent programming of a GREEN-PR mini-grant recipient, Puerto Rico Composta. Science teachers are incorporating SMM concepts into their curriculum using techniques and resources developed by Puerto Rico Composta. Teachers from other subjects have become part of the initiative and have integrated these topics in their curriculum as well.

Creative Reuse:
The school reused plastic soda bottles as planters to create a beautiful vertical garden.

Recycling at Events:
– Members of the East Hub have volunteered to coordinate recycling at events such as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Naguabo in April 2016. About fifty volunteers from the East Hub, in collaboration with Puerto Rico Composta, successfully recovered a total of 1,235 pounds of material, which consisted of 804 pounds of plastic, 312 pounds of cardboard, and 119 pounds of aluminum.
