SUNY-ESF Study Explains Climate Change's Effect on Bird Species
Researchers at SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) have documented that a variety of North American bird species are extending breeding ranges to the north, adding to concerns about climate change, according to a study published by the Journal Global Change Biology. In a study published on the journal's web site, the SUNY-ESF researchers state the change in the birds' breeding ranges "provides compelling evidence that climate change is driving range shifts." "There is a wide spectrum of changes that are occurring and those changes are occurring in a relatively short amount of time. We're not talking centuries, we're talking decades," says William Porter, an ESF faculty member and director of the college's Adirondack Ecological Center. "The most significant finding is that this is the first time in North America that we're showing the repeating pattern that's been shown before in Europe. It's the first time we've been able to replicate those European findings, using the same kind of study." To learn more, click here.

Niagara Falls Water Board Retains O'Brien & Gere for Tunnel Project
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner O'Brien & Gere has been retained by the Niagara Falls Water Board (NFWB) to provide funding assistance, design, and construction management services for the rehabilitation of the North Gorge Interceptor sewer line. Running 100 feet beneath the Robert Moses Parkway, this rock tunnel interceptor conveys sewage from the northern portions of the City of Niagara Falls to the Gorge Pumping Station, which then pumps the wastewater to the Niagara Falls treatment plant. O'Brien & Gere conducted a feasibility study during 2008 that examined alternate methods and procedures for completing the debris removal work. "This program reinforces O'Brien & Gere's capabilities in the support of municipal water and sewer infrastructure," says James Kyles, Vice President and Project Officer for this program. "Our history with this particular project gives us insight into the most efficient and cost-effective methods to meet the Niagara Falls Water Board's needs." For the complete story, click here.

SRC Introduces New Postdoctoral Scientist Program for Toxicology and Biological Science Research Projects
SyracuseCoE Gold Partner SRC has announced a new Postdoctoral Scientist Program, established within its Environmental Science Business Area, which will give scientists an opportunity to participate in and complete research projects in toxicology. Program participants will work under direct supervision of the company's Environmental Science Business Area's Director of Science and Technology. The initial term of this program will last for one year but, upon successful completion of the first year, participants may opt for extensions. Those accepted to the program are being considered the next generation of scientists in human health risk assessment, working toward innovative solutions to challenges in environmental health and national security. Currently, the program is funded for two scientists, but that number may increase as the program grows and advances. For more information, click here.
