John and Carol Fox to Establish SU Endowed Professorship
in Sustainable Energy Studies As president and CEO of Innovation Fuels, a leading US biodiesel
manufacturer and a regional company with a global reach, John Fox (shown below) is among
those leading the charge to make the Earth a more sustainable place.
With a recent gift to SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University's (SU) L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS), Fox has made a commitment to educating
generations to come about the need for sustainability and developing
new innovations, and about ways to make that happen.
Fox
and his wife, Carol, of New York City, have made a commitment of up to $3.5 million dollars to LCS to establish an
endowed professorship in sustainable energy studies. In addition to allowing the hiring of a new faculty member, it is expected that the professorship will foster a strong collaborative relationship between the faculty in sustainable energy studies and SyracuseCoE and SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY-ESF. The gift is among the first that will be bolstered through Faculty Today, a new SU gift challenge program created to encourage donors to endow faculty chairs and professorships. Syracuse Architecture Announces Winners of Innovative Green Homes Competition
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University's School of Architecture, in partnership with SyracuseCoE and Home HeadQuarters Inc., has announced the three winners of "From the Ground Up: Innovative Green Homes," a competition that fosters advanced thinking about design, sustainability, and cost-effective building practices for the single-family house. Developed for a vacant infill site on Syracuse's Near Westside, the proposals and resulting houses will provide a new vision for one of the city's oldest neighborhoods and demonstrate the value of design within a typically underserved and demographically diverse community. The three winning teams are: ARO and Della Valle Bernheimer of New York; Cook + Fox/Terrapin Bright Green of New York and Washington, DC (design shown below); and Onion Flats (including Andropogon Associates, Rivera Structural Design, and MaGrann Associates) of Philadelphia. "The winning designs include many innovative strategies for energy efficiency and
superior indoor environmental quality that fit perfectly with the capabilities of firms
in Central Upstate New York," says SyracuseCoE Executive Director Ed Bogucz. "The
construction of these homes will help strengthen our region's reputation as a leader in
green building design, technology, and construction." For the full story, click here.

Fedrizzi: Green Buildings a Geat Use of Stimulus Writing in the Syracuse Post-Standard, Rick Fedrizzi--President, CEO, and Founding Chairman of SyracuseCoE Charter Member the US Green Building Council and a SyracuseCoE Board Member--writes that, "President Obama made good on one campaign promise last week by sending to Congress an economic recovery stimulus package that recognizes the powerful potential of investment in green buildings to put Americans back to work and save energy and money for thousands of American families and businesses at the same time. The return on that investment stands to be unprecedented in American history. There are 120 million homes and 5.1 million commercial buildings that dot the American landscape, and virtually every one of them could be made more energy efficient. According to McKinsey and Co., we could generate $160 billion in savings in the process. Simple things like improving insulation, weatherizing windows and doors, and wrapping water pipes from Seattle to Syracuse can deliver ongoing savings. It's an American-based workforce that has to do the work, and we must ramp up affordable and accessible green jobs training to carry out these improvements."
