EFC Plays Critical Role in Managing Debris Following Hurricane Sandy
EFC is assisting EPA Region 2 in cleanup efforts in New York City and surrounding areas devastated by Hurricane Sandy. EFC Director Mark Lichtenstein was on the ground in NYC in the weeks following the storm, focusing on more sustainable options to manage the debris. "The Hurricane Sandy debris management team, including many local residents, is focused on making this the 'greenest disaster relief effort in the history of the nation,'" said Lichtenstein. "It's a nearly insurmountable challenge, but a challenge that is being faced head on, as the lengthy cleanup process continues. Everyone involved is focused on making a positive difference." EFC/CSCS Receives Community Grant Award from NYSP2I for Spring Teacher Conference
The EFC/SyracuseCoE Center for Sustainable Community Solutions (CSCS) received $19,985 from the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute's (NYSP2I) Community Grants Program to fund its Spring Greening teacher conference in April 2013. The training will be held at the SyracuseCoE headquarters, and will feature keynote presentations, three concurrent tracks, exhibits, green building tours, and bus tours. Spring Greening will reach 70 teachers from 20 school districts in the greater Central New York Region. Learn More |
Syracuse University Chancellor, Onondaga County Executive and Mayor Receive U.S. Green Building Council Leadership Award
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recognized SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor, Onondaga County Executive Joanne Mahoney, and Mayor Stephanie Miner with the 2012 Global Community Leadership Award at the USGBC's Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in November. The award recognizes the trio for their individual and collaborative efforts to foster sustainability in Central New York through the support of green building, green infrastructure, and other community development initiatives, including Save the Rain and the Connective Corridor. CNY RPDB Seeks Public Input for its Vision CNY Regional Sustainability Plan to Potentially Direct Millions in Funding to the Area
The Vision CNY Regional Sustainability Plan covers the five counties of Central New York including Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, and Oswego Counties, and covers one of 10 designated regions across New York State. In 2013, approximately $90 million in state funding will be available from the Cleaner, Greener Communities Program to assist the 10 regions on a competitive basis to implement projects that support the goals and strategies of each regions plan. The public can contribute to Vision CNY through a new website, www.visioncny.org. The deadline for contributions is late December. Learn More

New Regulations Effective April 2013 and Implement Water Withdrawal Legislation Signed by Governor Cuomo
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has finalized regulation requiring a state permit for the withdrawal of large volumes of the state's water, effective April 13, 2013. The regulations limit water withdrawals greater than 100,000 gallons per day and expand the water withdrawal permitting program to include withdrawals for purposes beyond public water supply, such as those for commercial, manufacturing and industrial activities. Specifically, the regulations require approval before operating or proposing a system with the capacity to withdraw 100,000 gallons or more per day of surface and groundwater. Learn More |

Low Impact Development Construction, Installation and Maintenance Video Series
The Chesapeake Stormwater Network is pleased to announce the release of the first video in its three part instructional video series on Low Impact Development construction, installation and maintenance: A Guide to Proper Construction Techniques for Contractors, Local Governments and Involved Homeowners. The videos were produced by the Center for Watershed Protection in cooperation with the Chesapeake Stormwater Network. The target audiences for this construction video are individuals looking for information on how to properly install a BMP.
