Registration Open for Third Annual Accelerate CNY Conference, April 29
Accelerate CNY is a conference presented by regional businesses and economic
development organizations seeking to foster economic vitality and environmental
stewardship in New York's Creative Core. The event caters to businesses,
entrepreneurs and individuals interested in learning about the latest trends
in technology, manufacturing, energy and the environment. The half-day program provides a compact schedule, perfect for professionals,
and will be held at the Convention Center at Oncenter. Provided are a continental breakfast, a networking reception, and 12
educational workshops organized into four tracks, including
technology, manufacturing, business growth, and sustainability

Research by SyracuseCoE-Affiliated Professor Featured in Scientific American Research
by Prof. James S. Bonner, director
of SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Clarkson University's
Center for the Environment, on the water quality of the Hudson
River was recently featured in Scientific
American. Last year, the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries and Clarkson University
launched a $300,000 solar-powered 20-foot by nine-foot floating pontoon platform in the Hudson to measure and
assess water quality. The floating platform allows the researchers to collect data
using the canister at various points all along the river. The Beacon Institute's Center for Environmental Innovation and Education (CEIE)
in Beacon, NY will collect, sort, analyze, and graphically display
information about the river, making it available to Beacon Institute
and Clarkson researchers as well as those studying marine environments

Catching Rain: Green Infrastructure in Central New York Information Session Set, April 7 Join neighbors, community leaders, and students and faculty from SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY-ESF on April 7 at 6 p.m. at the Syracuse Museum of Science and Technology for a public information session about green infrastructure and what it means for our community. Green infrastructure is an essential tool for the health of our waterways, most notably Onondaga Creek and Onondaga Lake. The event will include presentations from Dr. Emanuel Carter of SUNY-ESF, Sue Miller of Onondaga County Water Environment Protection, Tom Suozzo of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and Dr. Rick Smardon of SUNY-ESF. The event will also include demonstrations of permeable pavement, how to build a rainbarrel, vermiculture (worm composting), and more. Refreshments will be provided. Urban Expert Carol Coletta Visits King & King, Reviews Other Syracuse Revitalization Projects
Carol Coletta, president and CEO of CEOs for Cities, and host and producer of the
nationally syndicated public radio show "Smart City," visited Syracuse on March 26 to learn more about the city's ongoing revitalization projects and to share the work of CEOs for Cities with leaders from the community and
SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University (SU).
Coletta spent some of her day at the Creative Corner, located on the fourth
floor of The Warehouse, 350 W. Fayette St., listening to presentations about
ongoing SU/city engagement efforts. She also attended the opening of SyracuseCoE Gold Partner King &
King Architects' new headquarters at 358 W. Jefferson St., had lunch in Armory
Square, and participated in a roundtable discussion with the Near Westside Initiative

Creative Core Selects SyracuseCoE StartUp Partner as Semi-Finalist in Quest for $100K Central Upstate Regional Alliance has announced 10 semi-finalists chosen from a field of 76 applicants to compete for the $100,000 grand prize offered by the New York's Creative Core Emerging Business Competition, sponsored by M&T Bank and New York Business Development Corporation, among others. The competition seeks the most innovative and growth-oriented emerging business in the 12-county Central Upstate region. SyracuseCoE Start-Up Partner Widetronix has been named a semi-finalist. Widetronix has worked with Cornell's Wide Bandgap Laboratory developing very small long life batteries with technology that significantly improves the manufacturability of the battery's semiconductors, for use in nanowatt to milliwatt defense, medical, and commercial applications. The grand prize winner of the $100,000 Emerging Business Competition will be announced during the Metropolitan Development Association's Annual Meeting on April 21 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Oncenter. Rick Fedrizzi, USGBC Named 'Visionaries in Sustainability' Award Recipients
The National Building Museum will recognize several Visionaries in Sustainability
for their leadership, commitment, and achievements in green building
and design, workforce development, and business practices during its
annual gala on June 4. SyracuseCoE Charter Member the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and its President, CEO, and Founding Chair S. Richard Fedrizzi--who is a SyracuseCoE Board Member--have been announced as the museum's first honorees. Founded in 1993, USGBC is transforming
the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated. Its
LEED program is the most widely used green building

LAST MINUTE PLANNER! Ed Bogucz to Present at Syracuse Chamber Business Show, April 2 SyracuseCoE Executive Director Ed Bogucz will present "Industry-University
Collaborations for Innovations in Environmental and Energy
Systems" at the 2009 Syracuse Chamber Business Show as part of a panel discussion organized by The Amos Project. The overall focus of the panel discussion will be on Central New York's regional assets. The panel will meet Thursday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m. in the Green Technology Seminar Room at the New York State Fairgrounds Center of Progress

F.O.C.U.S. to Focus on Economic Development, April 3 On April 3 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at The Atrium, Syracuse City Hall Commons, 201 E. Washington Street, F.O.C.U.S. Greater Syracuse will look at the issue of Economic Development in Central New York. The speaker will be Linda Dickerson Hartsock, who has a new position as Executive Director, Center for CleanTech Entrepreneurship and Vice President for CleanTech Initiatives at The Tech Garden. Hartsock will lead a new series of programs aimed at incubating and accelerating the growth of clean technology startups in Central Upstate New York. She was a founding member of the Central Upstate Regional Alliance and is a steering committee member of the Creative Core Green Team. There are already 419 firms in the Central Upstate green sector employing more than 10,000. The CleanTech initiative will support growth of companies in this sector in partnership with other regional efforts under the umbrella of a "NY Loves CleanTech" brand. The Tech Garden to Explore Alternative Hydropower, April 29 On April 29 from 5 to 7 p.m., "Alternative Hydropower" will be the subject of discussion at The Tech Garden, 235 Harrison Street, Syracuse. The guest speaker will be Dr. David A. Torrey of Advanced Energy Conversion, an engineering company with expertise in developing systems solutions using power electronics, embedded controls, and mechatronics.
