On May 24, stewards graduated from SU-EFC’s Sustainable Materials Management stewardship Program in Puerto Rico. For the past four months, stewards have been working to establish recycling and composting systems in more than 20 schools in the municipalities of Villalba, Guallanilla, San Sebastian, Hatillo, Aibonito, San Germán, Camuy, Rio Grande, Bayamón, and Vieques. Group presentations were given to a total of more than 1,500 students on projects including the importance of reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting materials. More than 100 cubic meters of organic waste was diverted to make compost instead of ending up in the landfills as a result of the program.
