On May 16, SU-EFC facilitated the Vieques Sustainability Task Force Meeting (VSTF), part of the Presidential Task Force on Puerto Rico, at the Centro de Úsos Múltiples in Isabel Segunda, Vieques. Speakers included James Albino in representation of the White House, Vieques Mayor Víctor Emeric, EPA Region 2 Administrator Judith Enck, and the Special Commissioner for Vieques and Culebra, Carlos Severino.

More than 60 members of the task force participated in VSTF Working Group discussions followed by a tour of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge led by Fish and Wildlife Services. The meeting’s afternoon roundtable discussion focused on key issues including community-based development and natural resource management, public health and well-being, private sector opportunities, superfund cleanup, remediation and outreach, and sustainable infrastructure on Vieques. The task force is set to release an action plan this summer.
