The New York State Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Stewardship Program trains college students (“Stewards”) on SMM principles and creates opportunities for Stewards to work with schools and community groups in target communities across the state. To date, the Stewardship Program has been offered during the spring 2015 and spring 2016 semesters.

Training is delivered in partnership with the Cornell Waste Management Institute (CWMI), and focuses on organics diversion as well as waste reduction. Stewards are provided with the hands-on experience and resources necessary to help schools and community groups establish and manage small to medium scale compost systems. Stewards are encouraged to develop creative methods of instruction, and to inspire a culture where greater value is placed on materials that are often discarded in schools and in the community.
