The Syracuse University Environmental Finance Center (SU-EFC) continues to provide assistance in the Meso-American Region (MAR) to the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature and their MAR leadership program. This program recruits potential local leaders (fellows), and educates and trains them to solve a particular conservation challenge affecting the MAR reef system. The project SU-EFC has been engaged in seeks to decrease solid waste materials–particularly plastics—from entering the reef system. MAR includes Belize, the Caribbean-basin areas of Guatemala and Honduras, and the State of Quintana Roo in Mexico. The SU-EFC provides training and technical assistance that will strengthen the capacities of emerging conservation leaders that participate in the MAR Leadership Program.
