With support from the USDA Rural Development, Syracuse EFC is offering mini-grants of up to $5,000 for Asset Management Inventory Development (rural NYS municipalities may apply), and Agriculture and Water Quality Improvement Studies (students and researchers at academic institutions, governmental and non-profit organizations may apply). Three awards in each category will be made, for a total of six awards. All proposals must be received by 5:00pm on February 1st, 2013, to be considered. Possible Mini-Grant Project Topics / Uses:

Agricultural and Water Quality Improvement Studies:

  • GIS data on agricultural lands and watersheds, and implications
  • Effectiveness of BMP implementation and innovative BMP practices
  • Building networks among local agricultural programs and agencies
  • Onsite waste management technologies
  • Social aspects of sustaining NY agriculture
  • How New York agricultural communities are responding to sustainability challenges such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, preservation of water quality, and integration of innovative technology (i.e., renewable energy, green infrastructure)
  • Perceived barriers to operating sustainably
  • Identification of resources needed by farmers to enable more sustainable operation and production

Asset Management Inventory Development:

  • Staff and/or intern time to conduct AM inventory
  • Hiring of a consultant to conduct AM inventory
  • Materials to support the AM inventory
  • Purchase of appropriate AM software for municipal computers
